New regulatory professions
CPSBC is advancing public safety under the Health Professions and Occupations Act, by regulating four new professions: clinical perfusionists, medical laboratory technologists, radiation therapists, and respiratory therapists.
This is part of the Ministry of Health's overall goal to modernize health regulation in BC. Regulating these professions builds public trust, promotes high-quality practice environments, and provides clear standards of practice within each profession.
New licensing regulation
Coming soon in 2027
Starting November 29, 2027, CPSBC will be regulating the following diagnostic and therapeutic professions:
- clinical perfusionists
- medical laboratory technologists
- radiation therapists
- respiratory therapists
What regulation means
For the professions
Once these professions are incorporated into CPSBC’s regulatory framework, these professions will have to:
- obtain a licence to practise and work in BC as of November 29, 2027
- maintain a licence annually to practise in BC
- adhere to practice standards
- comply with continuing professional development requirements
- respond to complaints and investigations
CPSBC's role
CPSBC will be responsible for:
- establishing licensing requirements for the profession
- setting professional and ethical standards
- supporting safe, competent, and ethical practice
- investigating complaints and addressing concerns about professional conduct or competence
- protecting the public through professional regulation
Obtaining a licence
There will be two paths to obtaining licensure depending on whether someone is a legacy applicant (currently employed) or new applicant (new to practising).
