CPSBC regulating four new professions in 2027
New regulatory professions
Starting November 29, 2027, CPSBC will be regulating the following diagnostic and therapeutic professions:
- clinical perfusionists
- medical laboratory technologists
- radiation therapists
- respiratory therapists
CPSBC looks forward to incorporating these professions into its regulatory framework.
Why is this change happening?
This is part of the Ministry of Health’s overall goal to modernize health regulation in BC. Under the Health Professions and Occupations Act, regulating these professions will allow CPSBC to advance public safety in more areas of BC’s health-care system. It will build public trust, promote high-quality practice environments, and provide clear standards of practice within each profession.
What to expect as a regulated profession?
Prior to these professions being incorporated into CPSBC’s regulatory framework, those working in these professions will have to:
- apply for licensure (so that the licence will be in effect on November 29, 2027)
Once these professions have been incorporated into CPSBC’s regulatory framework, these professions will have to:
- maintain licensure to practise
- adhere to practice standards
- comply with continuing professional development requirements
- respond to complaints and investigations
Initial licensing process: two paths
CSPBC is committed to providing a smooth transition for those working in these professions in BC. There are two paths to obtaining licensure for November 29, 2027, depending on whether someone is a legacy applicant or new applicant.
Legacy applicants
To avoid unnecessary gaps in service provision, CPSBC will have a “legacy” application for licensure stream for those currently employed as clinical perfusionists, medical laboratory technologists, radiation therapists and respiratory therapists in BC.
New applicants
A separate application stream will be available to applicants who are new to practising in BC, or those currently employed as clinical perfusionists, medical laboratory technologists, radiation therapists and respiratory therapists but did not complete the legacy application process.
This application process will be more detailed than the legacy application stream and will continue as the ongoing application process for all future applicants.
