Notification of bylaw amendments: Regulation of four new professions
Effective November 29, 2027, CPSBC will assume regulatory responsibility for four additional professions: clinical perfusionists, medical laboratory technologists, radiation therapists, and respiratory therapists.
On June 25, 2026, the CPSBC board approved proposed amendments to the Bylaws under the Health Professions and Occupations Act, SBC 2022, c.43 (HPOA) to support regulation of the four professions, specifically, part 6 – licensure, part 7 – permits, schedule B, and four new schedules.
Note: There are decisions about regulations, title, scope of practice, and restricted activities associated with these professions that have yet to be made by the Ministry of Health.
Many existing sections of the Bylaws will also apply to the four professions, including:
- general eligibility standards (section 6-4), which ensure that all applicants meet minimum standards of identity verification, professional competence, ethical conduct, legal authorization, and regulatory accountability before being licensed in BC;
- minimum practice hours for currency in clinical practice (section 6-13), which ensure that licensees maintain sufficient recent clinical experience and competence to practise safely;
- requirements regarding a licensee’s re-entry into and change in scope of clinical practice (sections 6-14 and 6-15); and
- renewal requirements (section 6-62), which require licensees to complete the annual licence renewal process.
