The Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA) has brought positive changes to CPSBC’s quality assurance framework and the Prescription Review Program (PRP).
Under the PRP’s updated mandate, every licensee will have the opportunity to review their prescribing data with the best available scientific literature to support meaningful, evidence-informed improvements in practice.
The PRP is shifting from a primarily reactive model to a more proactive and inviting approach. Rather than intervening only when concerns arise, PRP is creating space for early reflection, discussion, and shared commitment to safe prescribing and patient safety. The goal is to normalize engagement with prescribing data as part of ongoing professional development.
All licensees who prescribe opioid, sedative, simulant, and other psychoactive medications—medications that have the potential for misuse, diversion, or harm— will be reviewed on a cyclical basis, with opportunities for collegial engagement focused on what matters most to them and their patients.
The PRP will also be emphasizing online courses, web resources, and other professional development offerings to create a coordinated, multifaceted approach to optimizing safe prescribing.
