CPSBC’s practice standard development process has evolved with the launch of the Health Professions and Occupations Act. A key change introduced under the legislation is the addition of professional standards advisors (PSAs) who will provide expert input throughout the development of practice standards. PSAs have expertise in ethics, eligibility, and clinical practice, enabling them to provide advice on the development of practice standards and support CPSBC in fulfilling its regulatory mandate.
Moving forward, PSAs will be advising and guiding the development of all practice standards, working in close collaboration with CPSBC’s policy team and the new Indigenous Advisory Working Group. PSAs will draw on their expertise and experience to help define the need and rationale for a new standard, draft key principles, discuss operational considerations, and support a robust engagement plan to gather feedback from licensees, the public and key health partners. PSAs are also responsible for presenting new or significantly revised standards to the board for approval.
