Maintaining currency in clinical practice
Under section 6-13 of the CPSBC Bylaws, you must have practised within the scope of your class of licence for at least 24 weeks and a minimum of 960 hours during the preceding rolling three-year period in order to be considered current for clinical practice.
When calculating practice hours, the following activities do not count toward the minimum requirements:
- Research
- Teaching
- Administration
- Professional regulation activities
Maintaining these minimum practice requirements helps ensure that you remain clinically current and continue to provide safe, competent care within your authorized scope of practice.
Changing or expanding your scope of practice
If you are planning to significantly change or expand the focus or scope of your clinical practice, you must notify CPSBC before making the change if you have not practised in that area for at least 24 weeks and 960 hours during the preceding rolling three-year period.
Under section 6-15 of the Bylaws, licensees who intend to make these changes must:
- Notify the registrar in writing
- Meet the applicable education and training requirements for the area of practice
- Successfully complete any education, retraining, or assessment required by the registrar before beginning practice in the new or expanded area
These requirements help ensure licensees have the knowledge, skills, and recent clinical experience necessary to provide safe patient care when transitioning to a different area of practice.
Planning a change?
If you are considering a significant change or expansion to your clinical practice, we encourage you to contact CPSBC as early as possible. Early notification allows CPSBC to work with you to determine whether you need additional education, retraining, or other requirements apply before you begin practising in the new area.
