Statement on the passing of Dr. Doug Cochrane

On behalf of the Board and staff of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC, we acknowledge with sadness the passing of Dr. Doug Cochrane, a leader in health-care quality and patient safety.

Dr. Cochrane held many important medical leadership roles throughout his career. He was a pediatric neurosurgeon, providing medical care at BC Children’s Hospital and Sunny Hill Health Centre in Vancouver until 2017. In addition, he was chair of the BC Patient Safety Task Force since its inception in 2003 and chair of the BC Patient Safety and Quality Council (now Health Quality BC) from 2008 until 2019. After retiring from clinical practice, Dr. Cochrane joined Interior Health as board chair.

We are grateful for Dr. Cochrane’s many contributions to health system transformation, quality improvement and advancements in patient safety protocols across Canada. We send our condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues at this difficult time.
