Patrick D. Rowe, MD, CCFP (EM), FCFP

President

Dr. Patrick Rowe obtained his medical degree from the University of British Columbia in 1992. He is an emergency room physician and the current department head at the University Hospital of Northern BC in Prince George. He is also the regional medical lead, emergency and trauma for the Northern Health Authority. Dr. Rowe was elected to the College Board in 2013.

District 5 | Thompson-Okanagan

Michael D. Carter, MD, FRCSC

Vice-president

A graduate of the University of British Columbia medical school, Dr. Carter has practised medicine for more than 30 years. He currently practises as a specialist in urology in Kelowna. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada and has served as surgical representative on the Interior Health Surgical Council. Dr. Carter was elected to the College Board in 2015.

Stephen G. Holland, MD, FRCPC

Treasurer

Dr. Stephen Holland has been practising medicine for 40 years. He graduated from the University of Calgary medical school in 1973, and completed his residency at McGill University. He currently practises gastroenterology in Victoria. Dr. Holland was elected to the College Board in 2015.

District 2 | Vancouver Island, Central and Northern

Gerrard A. Vaughan, MD, CFPC

Dr. Gerrard Vaughan graduated from the University of British Columbia medical school in 1973 and practises family medicine in Nanaimo. He has held several leadership positions in his community, including hospital chief of staff, chair of the local medical advisory committee, chair of the Vancouver Island Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee, and president of the hospital medical staff. Dr. Vaughan is a past president of the College Board. He was elected in 2009.

Ronald R. Abrahams, MD, FCFP, M.S.C.

Dr. Ron Abrahams has been a physician for more than 40 years and currently practises family medicine in Vancouver. He received his medical degree from Queen’s University before completing his residency at the University of British Columbia. He is currently medical director of perinatal addictions at BC Women’s Hospital, and a consultant physician at the Sheway Clinic. Dr. Abrahams was elected to the College Board in 2017.

District 3 | Vancouver and surrounding area

Bruce A. Fleming, MD, FRCPC

Dr. Bruce Fleming is a graduate of the University of British Columbia medical school and has been practising medicine for almost 40 years. He specializes in emergency medicine and currently practises at Vancouver General Hospital and UBC Hospital. He most recently completed a five-year term as associate dean of admissions at UBC Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Fleming was elected to the College Board in 2015.

Gurdeep Parhar, MD, CCFP, CIME

A graduate of the University of Calgary medical school, Dr. Gurdeep Parhar has practised medicine for 25 years. In addition to his medical practice in Vancouver, he also serves as the executive associate dean, clinical partnerships and professionalism at the University of British Columbia, and he has held various senior leadership positions in the Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Parhar was elected to the College Board in 2013.

District 4 | Fraser

Luay F. Dindo, MD, CCFP, BCEM

Dr. Luay Dindo received his medical degree from the University of Alberta before completing a residency at Memorial University. He holds board certification in emergency medicine and currently practises family medicine at Surrey Memorial Hospital, where from 2010 to 2016 he served as chief of medical staff. Dr. Dindo was elected to the College Board in 2017.

District 4 | Fraser

B. Anne Priestman, MD, FRCPC

Dr. Anne Priestman obtained her medical degree from the University of British Columbia, where she also completed her residency. She has been practising for more than 20 years, and is a specialist in internal medicine, and endocrinology and metabolism. She currently works in New Westminster. Dr. Priestman was elected to the College Board in 2015.

District 6 | Kootenays

Lawrence C. Jewett, MD, FRCSC

Dr. Lawrence Jewett obtained his medical degree from Dalhousie University in 1974. He currently practises as a specialist in otolaryngology and serves as executive medical director for the East Kootenay region. He was previously chief of staff at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. Dr. Jewett is a past president of the College Board. He was elected in 2004.

Appointed members

Chilliwack

Barry D. Penner, QC

Mr. Barry Penner is a senior counsel and strategic advisor for Penner Pacific Advisory Services. A practising lawyer with international experience, Mr. Penner provides advice for issues involving First Nations, various levels of government and the media. Throughout his nearly 16 years as an MLA, which included serving as Attorney General, Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation, and as British Columbia's longest-serving Minister of Environment, he represented the residents of the eastern Fraser Valley. Mr. Penner was appointed to the College Board in 2015.

Courtenay

Bruce C. Bell

Mr. Bruce Bell is a retired lawyer who currently serves as director of the Pacific Salmon Foundation, and governor (and past chair) of North Island College. During his professional career, he was chair of a private bank for a family foundation based in the Bahamas. Prior to that, he was a senior partner with Vancouver-based Russell & DuMoulin (now Faskens). Mr. Bell holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws from the University of British Columbia. He was appointed to the College Board in 2016.

Victoria

Tarjeet T.S. Mann

Mr. Tarjeet Mann retired as the principal at Braefoot Elementary School in 2017. Mr. Mann’s past community involvement includes serving as a district track and field coordinator for the Greater Victoria School District, and a president for the Greater Victoria Elementary School Sports Association. Mr. Mann holds a bachelor of education from the University of Victoria and a master of arts in administration and curriculum from Gonzaga University. He has been recognized by the Learning Partnership as one of "Canada's Outstanding Principals." Mr. Mann was appointed to the College Board in 2017.

Vancouver

Shirley F.J. Ross

Ms. Shirley Ross currently serves as a member of the Canada-India Maternal Infant Health Project. She is also involved on the Women’s Advisory Committee for the City of Vancouver. She has acted as community developer and community health nurse for the Vancouver Health Board, Global Health Project Director for Oxfam Canada, and general duty nurse in various acute care hospitals across BC, Alberta, and Manitoba. She holds a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of British Columbia and a nursing diploma from Red River Community College. Ms. Ross was appointed to the College Board in 2017.

Smithers

H. Nina Purewal

Ms. H. Nina Purewal is the administrative crown counsel in the Smithers Crown Counsel office. She has been practising as a lawyer for over 12 years and has worked in many different sectors, private firms, government, and non-profits. She is actively involved in the community, which includes serving on the board of the Society for Children and Youth of BC. Ms. Purewal obtained her BA and LLB from the University of Victoria and has a master’s degree in international human rights law from the University of Oxford. She was appointed to the College Board in 2018.
