Medical Assistance in Dying practice standard revised
The Medical Assistance in Dying practice standard and accompanying Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) document have been revised to include information regarding how a physician may obtain the Prescription and Medication Administration Record.
Minor revision made to Cannabis for Medical Purposes practice standard
The Cannabis for Medical Purposes practice standard has been revised to provide added clarity regarding a physician’s responsibility to document a comprehensive medical assessment of the condition to be treated with cannabis, including a history, physical examination and investigations (as appropriate) before offering their patient a prescription.

Medical Assistance in Dying: changes to reporting requirements
As of November 1, 2018, new federal and provincial reporting requirements for Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) are in effect. All required provincial forms for MAiD must now be submitted to the BC Ministry of Health’s Medical Assistance in Dying Oversight Unit, which is the designated recipient of reportable information from physicians, nurse practitioners and pharmacists.
These reporting requirements are explained in detail on the forms and accompanying instruction guides, which can be found on the .
The practice standard , as well as the accompanying , have been updated to reflect the changes in reporting requirements.

Crohn’s disease resource available to College registrants
For registrants who are, or anticipate, treating patients affected by Crohn’s disease, a new ebook Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: A Clinicians’ Guide is available through the College library. The book provides an overview of diagnostic strategies, and the various treatment options available. Also discussed are the extraintestinal manifestations, nutritional strategies, and management of special populations such as pediatric or pregnant patients.
Login is required to access the book and it can be read either online with multiple users, or one user at a time can borrow it for one day. Registrant who need assistance accessing a copy are welcome to contact the College library.

New templates for practice standards and professional guidelines
Please note that the College’s practice standards and professional guidelines have been updated to a new template. Each standard and guideline is now formatted with a title page inclusive of past revision dates, date of next review, version number and related topics.
Consultation on Sale and Dispensing of Drugs by Physicians and Promotion and Sale of Products now open
Practice standards and professional guidelines are frequently revised to ensure that they are up-to-date and continue to meet the needs of changing practice environments, evolving health-care practices, and stakeholder values.
As directed by the Board, the College will be reviewing all practice standards and professional guidelines related to medicine and commerce. These practice standards and professional guidelines will be reviewed in pairs over the coming year.
As a first step, the College will be focusing on gathering feedback, from both the public and the profession, on the following two practice standards: Sale and Dispensing of Drugs by Physicians, and Promotion and Sale of Products. This consultation will run from October 15 - November 2, 2018.
