Anesthesia services in dental facilities
Licensees providing anesthesia care in community-based dental settings may be required to participate in Practice Enhancement Program (PEP) assessments. These include peer assessments and practice environment assessments at various career stages.
What is PEP and why?
Practice Enhancement Program (PEP) is a collegial program that provides feedback on clinical practice and recommendations for practice improvement.
The program is committed to partnering with licensees in their ongoing commitment to quality patient care. The assessments are educational and focused on quality improvement.
Licensees must meet the BC Medical Quality Initiative (BC MQI) privileging dictionaries for:
- anesthesiology, or
- family practice anesthesia.
Licensees participating in a PEP assessment may be eligible for continuing professional development (CPD) credits through the College of Family Physicians of Canada or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Yes. The Health Professions and Occupations Act and part 10-3 of the CPSBC Bylaws outline the requirement for participation in a quality assurance program. Practice Enhancement Program is a quality assurance program administered by CPSBC.
CPSBC assesses the professional performance of an anesthesiologist or FPA for the purposes of quality assurance.
Anesthesiologists and FPAs, who provide community-based care in dental facilities, are required to participate in the PEP at different points in time in their career.
An anesthesiologist or FPA selected for an assessment must co-operate fully with the Practice Enhancement Program Committee and its assessors under section 10-3 of the CPSBC Bylaws.
Information collected through the assessment process is confidential, protected under the HPOA, and will only be used to guide learning and further professional development.
Without the anesthesiologist or FPA’s permission, information gathered through Practice Enhancement cannot be shared with other areas of CPSBC, including any disciplinary processes, nor accessed under freedom of information requests. However, serious clinical care or practice concerns may be referred to the disciplinary process.
